Peru used to be the heart of the Inca empire until Spain conquered the land around 1572 and put it under the Spanish regime. After a whole lot of years, Peru got its own regime back in 1821 I believe but it wasn’t all for the best, the governments were varying between democratic and dictators throughout the years. The people from Peru had another bad period from 1980 till 1992 when a Maoist terror movement tried to overthrow the government with brute force and terror throughout the whole country. Still, Peru is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and a thrash diamond from Peru is Vulture from the city Lima. The band is fronted by Miriam Maldonado and they released Transicion, their debut full-length last year.
How’s life in Peru?
It is a country of great cultural diversity with many tourist attractions, in terms of daily life we have to have normal jobs (offices, studies, own businesses) to survive, we can’t live from our music but it’s something that we are passionate about and we want to continue doing it, it’s something that we will not leave and we hope that the future looks bright for us.
How has the overall response been so far from music critics and fans on the album?
The truth is, we are surprised about the progress that has been achieved with the album, we have been receiving excellent reviews regarding the last album. We are happy with this step that the band achieved and we continue working on more material for 2018.
Were there any memorable moments during the recording of the album or the writing process?
I think that every moment was memorable, after the first album you get experiences and teachings that will help us with the next recordings.
How do you feel the new album compares to previous material?
I think that the band hasn’t had much changes in each production that we have recorded, on this album we have mixed new sounds that were not in the demo or the EP but the essence of the band is always maintained.
Which song on the album is your favorite when playing live?
Vulnerable is one of my favorite topics since it narrates a moment of my life in which I managed to overcome all the adversity that was presented to me.
How did the name of the band come about?
The vulture is usually characterized by eating carrion in order to survive. Throughout this time, metaphorically speaking, humans feed on problems to become stronger and survive.
What’s been going on for the band during the time between releases?
In general, presentations and small tours are always taking place to promote the material that has come out.
You started in 2009 with the band, are you happy with the way things are going for the band or is there something that could be better?
In 2009 I began to take my first steps as a vocalist, going through some bands and then started the project Vulture with making covers of bands. In 2012, with the arrival of new members, it was possible to realize the idea of a band and that’s how Vulture was born. We launched in a professional way the demo Inexistente and did the first tour of the band.
When did you start with singing and why did you want to sing?
I listened to a lot of music at that time, most modern metal bands at that time. I am very interested in the band OTEP with their female vocalist, she inspired me enough to start my musical journey.
How did you discover your own style of singing and do you have advice for other singers looking to develop their own sound?
I think that as you progress and record productions you learn a lot about singing and you get to form your musical identity, every time you play live or production is recorded it is a great challenge for me as a vocalist. A good tip is always to take a teacher that can help you improve the vocals technically, this will help a lot when you have to play live and record extensive productions. Otherwise, there is no good technique and you can get hurt and another is to have many vocal influences from various styles of music. It helps you to have a better perception of everything and so you can create your own style.
Do you have any practices to keep your voice in good condition?
Rehearse and do not lose the rhythm. Weeks before an event or a tour I leave aside ice creams and cold drinks, that will avoid attracting some type of disease and keep the voice in optimal conditions.
Who influenced you the most at the beginning of your career and who are your current favorites? Is there another type of music you would like to sing?
At the beginning I was influenced by the vocalist of the band Otep, I currently like bands like Arch Enemy, Jinjer and The Agonist. Other styles that I would like to sing are pop, salsa, and urban rock.
